Hot on the heels of an acclaimed album release, we welcome Italian pianist Simona Premazzi for her Jazz at Lincoln Center debut. Her style is spellbinding and mood-setting, rewarding thoughtful listeners with the opportunity to get swept up in the sound. Premazzi’s playing can be busy and frenetic, but always within a framework of harmonic choices and rhythmic logic that keeps the feel calm, contained, and hypnotic. The New York Times aptly describes her solos as “flowing and abrupt, always interesting,” and when listening to Premazzi, the inherent contradiction in “flowing and abrupt” somehow makes perfect sense. True to the title of The Lucid Dreamer (from which she will be presenting), both her compositions and solos are dreamlike and evocative of an altered, but present mindfulness. Drifting and confidently leaping between ideas, she gives listeners no cause to stop and question the moment-to-moment or big picture logic of the journey, both of which are firmly in place.
