“…a figure of peerless veneration in Detroit…a trusted purveyor of hard-bop verities and a hands-on mentor and educator to several generations of jazz musicians.” – The New York Times
Trumpeter Marcus Belgrave is Detroit's official Jazz Master Laureate. Mentored by Ray Charles and Clifford Brown, Belgrave came to prominence in the late-1950s with Ray Charles’ original small band. Belgrave was at the vanguard of the modern jazz movement in the 1960s, performing and recording with innovators like Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, and Max Roach. An avid mentor, Belgrave believes in grooming the next generation of jazz musicians. His protégés include violinist Regina Carter, bassist Robert Hurst, and saxophonist Kenny Garrett.
