An evening with futurist and author Ted Chu, PhD
Our featured speaker, Dr. Ted Chu, is an acclaimed author, macroeconomist, and philosopher who was the formerly chief economist of General Motors. Ted is also a futurist and a polymath, and is currently a clinical professor of economics at New York University. His new book Human Purpose and Transhuman Potential: A Cosmic Vision for Our Future Evolution (Origin Press, March 1, 2014) has been called by philosopher Michael Zimmerman, PhD, “the finest book in the transhumanism field since Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near.” According to James Hughes, PhD, author of Citizen Cyborg, “Ted Chu brings an astonishing breadth of philosophical, religious, and technological reflection to bear on the most important questions we could ask.” Ted’s one-hour talk will be followed by a facilitated dialogue among the participants.
MORE ABOUT TED CHU'S WORK
Today we face the imminent possibility of transcending our biological form, of becoming—or creating—entirely new life forms that will overcome our all-too-human limitations. In Human Purpose and Transhuman Potential, Ted Chu, PhD makes the provocative claim that the human race is not only an end in itself, but may also be a means to a higher end—and that our true purpose is to give rise to our evolutionary successors.
In this multidisciplinary philosophic inquiry that reflections enormous erudition, Ted Chu examines the import of cosmic evolution in light of the extraordinary potentials that science and technology have now placed within our reach. Chu's original ethical argument about the transhumanist project is steeped in evolutionary theory and insights from the world's wisdom traditions—and sweeps aside the reductionism and materialism of most transhumanist thinkers. Chu makes us fully aware of the technological risks involved, while providing a cosmic perspective on the posthuman era that enables us to face its enormous practical implications in the decades ahead.
