The Spelman College Glee Club has maintained a reputation of choral excellence for over fifty years. It is an organization that is open by audition to all students of the college community. Repertoire consists of sacred and secular choral literature for women’s voices with special emphasis on traditional spirituals, music by African-American composers, music from many cultures and commissioned works.
The Glee Club is the primary performance organization of the College and sings for most campus events. It has had the unique opportunity to perform with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra with the world-renowned singer, Jessye Norman, in a Martin Luther King Jr., Birthday Celebration. The Glee Club has also been featured on "Performance Today" for National Public Radio. A perennial highlight of the Christmas season in Atlanta is the Christmas Carol Concert presented by both the Spelman and Morehouse College Glee Clubs. The audience swells to over 6,000 for the three nights of these festive concerts. Major performances of the Spelman Glee Club include the Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert, the Spring Concert Tour, the Annual Fall and Spring Concerts at Spelman, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Special Birthday Concert.
Past directors include the late Willis Laurence James, Dr. Roland Allison and Dr. Norma Raybon. The Spelman Glee Club is under the direction of Dr. Kevin Johnson, Assistant Professor of Music.
