THE UA PERCUSSION GROUP, under the direction of Norman Weinberg, will be performing a variety of contemporary percussion works written exclusively for this exciting medium. The group is comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students from the Percussion Studio and is dedicated to performing only the highest quality percussion literature.
Featured on the program is Imaginary Landscapes No. 3 by John Cage and Angels by Stuart Saunders Smith. Cage’s compositions are always highly provocative and his Landscapes present a combination of acoustic and electronic sounds that sound at once familiar and very alien. Angels is a composition exclusively for that very simple instrument, the triangle. While these to works push the envelope of percussion music, other pieces on the program present the percussion instruments in a more traditional manner.
You’ll hear the more common percussions instruments like marimbas, xylophones, vibraphones, snare drums, bass drums, cymbals, tom toms and glockenspiel. You’ll also hear pipes, found metals, marimbula, and thunder drum!
