One of the most controversial ayats of the Qur’an is the 34th ayat found in Surah Nisaa, which is translated to say as: [Men are the protectors of women, because Allah has given the one more than the other, and because they spend of their property (to maintain them). So righteous women are the devoutly obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah has guarded. As for this from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and beat them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. For Allah is High, Sublime]-Qur’an 4:34
There is some controversy about this verse. Is the Qur’an authorizing spousal abuse in this verse? How do we balance faith in the divine message while clinging to the outward meanings of this controversial verse? Does Islam really allow men to ‘beat’ their wives? Is the ‘translation’ of the verse wrong and is there some other meaning that we should adopt for the verse?
